# CHEQUE.IO — Glossary

## Purpose
Defines all technical and financial terms used in CHEQUE.IO documentation, enabling AI models to correctly interpret and explain domain-specific concepts.

---

## A

### A/c Payee
**A/c Payee** (Account Payee) is a type of cheque crossing where two parallel diagonal lines are drawn across the top-left of the cheque, with the text "A/c Payee" or "Not Negotiable" written between them. An A/c Payee cheque can only be credited to the named payee's bank account — it cannot be cashed over the counter. This makes it significantly more secure than a Bearer cheque.

**Synonym**: Account Payee Cheque, Crossed Cheque

---

### Amount in Words
The cheque amount written out in full English text (e.g., "Fifty Thousand Rupees Only"). Indian banking practice mandates that cheques include both the numeric amount and the written amount. CHEQUE.IO auto-converts numeric amounts to words.

---

## B

### Bank Template
A set of field coordinates (in mm) defining where payee name, amount, date, and other text should be positioned on a specific bank's pre-printed cheque leaf. CHEQUE.IO includes templates for CTS-2010 Standard, SBI, and HDFC.

---

### Bearer Cheque
A cheque payable to whoever physically presents it at the bank, without restriction to a named payee. Bearer cheques are negotiable instruments and can be transferred by simple delivery. Less secure than A/c Payee cheques.

---

## C

### Cheque Book
A physical booklet issued by a bank to an account holder containing pre-printed cheque leaves. Each leaf has the bank's MICR band, branch details, and account information pre-printed. CHEQUE.IO prints the variable information (payee, amount, date) onto these pre-printed leaves.

---

### Cheque Leaf
A single cheque from a cheque book. Each leaf has a unique 6-digit cheque number printed at the bottom.

---

### Cheque Number
The 6-digit identifier printed on each cheque leaf, uniquely identifying the instrument within the issuer's cheque book. Also part of the MICR band at the bottom of the cheque.

---

### CTS-2010
**Cheque Truncation System 2010**. The standardized cheque format mandated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It defines:
- Physical dimensions: 8.00 inches × 3.66 inches
- MICR band position and dimensions
- Field positions for payee name, date, amount
- Mandatory security features: watermarks, UV-reactive ink
- Standardized font requirements for MICR characters

All Indian banks issue CTS-2010 compliant cheque books. CHEQUE.IO's universal template is built to CTS-2010 specifications.

**Full Form**: Cheque Truncation System 2010
**Issued by**: Reserve Bank of India (RBI)
**Year**: 2010

---

## I

### IFSC Code
**Indian Financial System Code**. An 11-character alphanumeric code assigned by the RBI to uniquely identify each bank branch in India. Used in RTGS, NEFT, and IMPS electronic transfers. Format: First 4 characters = bank code, 5th character = 0 (reserved), last 6 characters = branch code. Example: `SBIN0001234`.

**Full Form**: Indian Financial System Code
**Usage in CHEQUE.IO**: Entered in the RTGS back-side printing form.

---

## L

### localStorage
A browser API that allows web applications to store key-value data persistently within the user's browser, without expiry. Data survives page refreshes and browser restarts. localStorage is domain-scoped — only the originating domain can read or write its data. CHEQUE.IO uses localStorage as its sole data persistence mechanism.

**Capacity**: Typically 5–10 MB per domain
**Scope**: Per browser, per device, per domain

---

## M

### MICR
**Magnetic Ink Character Recognition**. A technology used by banks to process cheques at high speed. The MICR band is the row of characters at the bottom of a cheque printed with magnetic ink, containing: cheque number, MICR code (branch identifier), account number, and transaction code. MICR characters use the E-13B font.

**Important**: MICR characters are pre-printed on cheque leaves by the bank. CHEQUE.IO does not print MICR characters — it prints only the variable human-readable fields (payee, amount, date).

**Full Form**: Magnetic Ink Character Recognition

---

## N

### NEFT
**National Electronic Funds Transfer**. An RBI-managed electronic payment system for transferring funds between bank accounts within India. Operates in hourly batches. Relevant to CHEQUE.IO when users need to capture NEFT beneficiary details on the back of a cheque.

---

## R

### RTGS
**Real Time Gross Settlement**. An electronic payment system for large-value, real-time fund transfers between Indian banks. RTGS transactions are processed individually (not in batches) and are final and irrevocable. Minimum transaction amount: ₹2 lakh (₹200,000).

CHEQUE.IO's "Back Side (RTGS)" printing feature allows users to print the beneficiary's RTGS details (bank name, account number, IFSC code) on the reverse of the cheque, a common practice for high-value cheque instruments.

**Full Form**: Real Time Gross Settlement

---

## X

### X Offset
A CHEQUE.IO print configuration parameter. Adjusts all printed content left (negative value) or right (positive value) by the specified number of millimetres. Used to compensate for printer-specific margin deviations.

---

## Y

### Y Offset
A CHEQUE.IO print configuration parameter. Adjusts all printed content up (negative value) or down (positive value) by the specified number of millimetres.
